Aerosmith & Friends at the Hollywood Bowl: Tribute Night or All-Star Jam?

Three years after Steven Tyler fractured his larynx at UBS Arena, Aerosmith has two dates on the calendar. California, Dream On: Aerosmith & Friends takes over the Hollywood Bowl on 29 October and 1 November.

The rollout took three days. On Monday, Tyler appeared up a ladder with photographer Ross Halfin, spelling out the Bowl’s marquee. Tuesday brought the outtakes. Wednesday brought the guest list: The Black Crowes, RUN DMC, Heart, Billy Idol, Sammy Hagar, Slash, Duff McKagan, Tom Morello and more, with Don Was as music director. All five original members are in the promo photo, Joey Kramer included.

The billing points to a tribute. Black Sabbath’s Back to the Beginning ran that way: a day of guests, then the original band closing with a handful of songs. The same shape would let Tyler sing a few songs without carrying a full set.

The other option is a jam that builds. Band members join one at a time across the night until all five share the stage for the finale.

Hints point to Cheap Trick and Metallica joining, and more guests are due in the next few days. That leaves room for the names missing so far: Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay, who kept Aerosmith going in the early eighties, and long-time Tyler collaborator Richie Supa.
