The Hollywood Bowl Presales: One Good Hour

Tickets for the two Hollywood Bowl nights of California, Dream On: Aerosmith & Friends went through a stack of presales in two days before the general sale on Saturday. The fan club hour was the best deal of the lot, and the shortest.

The Pool sits closest to the stage, with the Garden Boxes and then the Terrace Boxes wrapped around it. The Super Seats are the three centre sections of the next ring, J1, H and G1. From there the lettered sections climb back to V, W and X at the top of the hill.

Citi cardmembers went first, on Thursday. From the start, Ticketmaster split the Bowl in two. Standard-priced seats sat behind presale codes, while Official Platinum, priced on demand and open to anyone, took the Pool, the Garden and Terrace Boxes, the Super Seats and the front rows of many mid sections at close to double the standard price. A Pool seat at Platinum ran $2,135 to $3,050.

Aero Force One members had one hour on Friday morning. The fan club price came in 20 to 30 percent under Citi across the house: $212.55 against $273.75 in the L and P sections, $238.30 against $334.55 in F, K, M and N, $618.55 against $804.15 in the Garden Boxes. It was also the only standard-priced way into the Pool, at $927.85.

The hour did not stay private. The code was posted online a few hours before the sale opened, and some members never got the email in time for a sixty-minute window. The Pool, Garden, Terrace, Super Seat and D and E allocations went first and went fast.

Peace Out ticket holders, Live Nation members and the venue and artist lists followed at 11am at the standard price, with aisle seats about $24 more.

The general sale opened on Saturday, and the fan club prices went with it. Seats still on sale at face value now cost the Citi rate: $273.75 in L and P, $334.55 in F, K, M and N, and $402.10 in D and E.

Thursday still has plenty of those. Sunday does not. Within a day, the second night was close to sold out at face value, with about twenty single seats left and one pair on the aisle in K2. The back sections, Q through X, are gone at face value on both nights.

Platinum held its price and sold anyway. Pool Platinum is down to two single seats on Thursday at $2,745 and one row on Sunday, Pool B row 6, at $2,135. Most of the Garden and Terrace Boxes have gone too. The one area that has not moved is the Super Seats, still on offer at $915 to $1,006.50 on both nights.

Resale has filled the gaps. On Thursday it starts at around $215 in the back rows. On Sunday the floor is $372 for a pair. L and P seats that sold for $212.55 in the fan club hour are listed at $400 to $800, and Pool seats run from $3,678 to almost $10,000. A single Pool A seat for Sunday, a section that went on sale at $927.85, is listed at $4,652. Once the code was public, it is hard to say how many fan club seats went to fans.

The gap at the front is the number that matters. A fan club Pool seat started at $927.85. The same ring at Platinum costs more than twice that, which made the fan club price a valuable and appreciated courtesy to Aerosmith’s most loyal fans.

For anyone still looking, Thursday is the easier night. For Sunday, the choice is a single seat at face value, resale, or Platinum. Whatever is left, along with any seats held back for a final release, is expected to sell out within hours.
