Joe Perry Plots the Next Move: Super-Group Tour, Set-List Headaches & Hope for One More Aerosmith Show

On 27 June 2025 Joe Perry jumped on SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation with Eddie Trunk to talk about life after Aerosmith’s postponed farewell run. With a fresh eight-show Joe Perry Project tour kicking off 13 August in Tampa and wrapping 17 September at the Hollywood Bowl (opening for The Who), the guitarist opened up on everything from an overdue memoir update to the physical toll of touring in his seventies.

Memoir Needs a Make-Over

Perry’s 2014 autobiography feels “kind of out-of-date” to him, and he’s eyeing “a second edition” to pack in the last decade of stories.

Touring at 70-Plus

Asked why a full Aerosmith roadshow is so hard to stage, Joe pulled no punches: the stage now “takes something out of you—physically and emotionally” .

Building the Pickup Super-Group

The new Joe Perry Project was born from a simple brief: “get some guys that want to play and let’s see what happens.” The resulting line-up is Chris Robinson (Black Crowes), Brad Whitford (Aerosmith), Robert DeLeo & Eric Kretz (Stone Temple Pilots) and Buck Johnson on keys.

Why It’s Only Eight Shows (For Now)

Everyone was busy, so “August was the first time we could get everybody clear,” Joe said, framing the run as a test-drive: “We’ll see if it clicks”.

The Impossible Set-List

First draft: 45 songs. Latest draft: about 25. “It’s still keeping me awake at night… an embarrassment of riches,” he laughed.

Deep-Cut Dreaming

Chris Robinson’s first request? The rarely-played “My Fist Your Face.” Joe’s reaction: “Wow, you really do listen to those records”.

One More Aerosmith Gig?

Joe remains optimistic but realistic: “I’m not going to keep the calendar empty just for that,” he admitted.

Rock-Show Philosophy

Expect garage-band spontaneity—like playing the 1950s rocker “Flying Saucer Rock & Roll” twice in a row because “it felt so good”.

Full-Circle Thrill with The Who

Sharing bills with The Who still blows his mind: “We were like… you got to be kidding me, The Who opened for us!”—and now they’ll share Fenway Park and Hollywood Bowl together.
