The Back-Burner: Aerosmith Outtakes & Demos

Get a Grip is the eleventh studio album by American rock band Aerosmith, released in April 1993 by Geffen Records. Get a Grip was the band’s last studio album to be released by Geffen before they returned to Columbia Records.

Initial recording sessions took place in January–February, 1992 at A&M Studios, Los Angeles, and September–November, 1992, at Little Mountain Sound, Vancouver, Canada.

A leaked database from January 27, 1993, reveals previously unknown song titles recorded between 1989 and 1993:

• “Tramp” on Jan 5, 1989, at Little Mountain.
• “Joe’s Psycho” and “Blues Don’t Bother” on Jan 6, 1990, “Slide” on the same date, all at Boneyard.
• “Scratch” and “Funk Chunk demo” on March 11, 1991, at Tinnory.
• “Ball and Chain” on June 18, 1991, at Studio F.
• “Ain’t Gonna” on Nov 8, 1991, at Boneyard.
• “Mama Wants” and “Hungry Lonely” on Feb 12, 1991, “Tofu” on Nov 14, 1991, all at Courtland.
• “Steel Tips” on Jan 14, 1992, at A&M.
• “Funk Stomp” on Feb 1, 1992.
• “Stomp (Jim V)” on Oct 3, 1992, at Courtland.

During their productive sessions at Little Mountain Studios in 1992, Aerosmith demonstrated an impressive level of creativity and work ethic. A documentary revealed a song chart, illustrating the band’s dedication to their craft. It confirmed that they worked on a variety of tracks, each at various stages of production. Importantly, every track had at least a basic track produced, showcasing the band’s commitment to exploring each idea thoroughly. The list of songs includes: Eat the Rich, Meltdown, Black Cherry, Amazing, Yo Mamma, Deuces are Wild, Lizard Love, Dime Store, Devils got a new Disguise, Joe’s Psycho, Get a Grip, Head First, Fever, Thirteen, Stop Stop Stop, (One more song), Trouble, Legendary, Shut Up, Flesh, Walk on Down, Wham Bam, MOP-STeSS’n, Crazy, Grip, Living on the Edge, Gotta Love It, Strange, Amazing Too, Line Up, and Cryin’. This session alone saw the band working on at least 31 tracks, reflecting their prolific nature and commitment to their music during this period.
